Week-end Itinerary with Onesail – Argentario, Giglio and Giannutri.
We set sail on Friday with night navigation, to reach and anchor at Cala Spalmatoio in Giannutri; 260 hectares in which is preserved an historical and archeological heritage from the Ancient Romans, in a unique scenery of Mediterranean thicket and crystal clear waters. From the sea the island looks short, with rocky coasts. From the N-S direction there are several recesses and it is quite articulate. It is possible to anchor only in Cala degli Spalmatoi and Cala Maestra. The last one is sheltered from all winds, with the exclusion of those from the II quadrant. Morning relax, swimming, breakfast and, if you want, an excursion to the Roman villa of the I-II century AC. Along the path it will be possible to admire the beautiful thicket of the island, with woods of holm and high trees. Lunch onboard, sun, swimming and relax.
In the afternoon we heave up the anchor and we sail towards Giglio, about two hours sailing to Cala delle Cannelle and the cove in front of the haven. Dinner onboard and stroll at the Giglio haven, the colorful and characteristic hamlet of Roman origins. Due to the granodiorite composition of its sea bed, the waters of the Giglio are so limpid and blue it reminds us of the sea of Sardinia.
Sunday Wake up in the bay, breakfast, swim and retour sailing. With some extra days it is possible to make an excursion at Giglio Castello; first inhabited centre of the island, the hamlet has been build and fortified by Pisans during the XII century and is still perfectly intact. It is located at a strategic position at 400 meters over the sea, it offers a great view over the Tuscany archipelago, over the coast and, when there is good weather, over Corsica. The retour to the boat is a pleasant 45 minutes stroll along the ancient medieval mule-track, during which you will enjoy the geology and variety of the “gigliese” flora. The dwelling with the castle, the ex semaphore and the ancient lighthouse), constitute an excellent landmark for sailors who are approaching the isle. Giglio Porto, on the eastern coast, is the major haven of the island. During night the haven is illuminated. If you have some more days available, it is possible to make a tour among the beautiful coves of Monte Argentario (le Cannelle, Cala grande…) and stay over at Porto Ercole and Porto S. Stefano for a good fish meal.
The Monte Argentario stretches out in the Tyrrhenian Sea, right opposite the two biggest southern islands of the beautiful Tuscan Archipelago: Giglio and Giannutri

Born as an island but subsequently joined, due to a particular inter-action of the sea currents with the mainland, the cape was probably inhabited by the Etrurian, becoming then a possession of the Roman Church, domain of the Spanish that fortified the two havens and the actual dwellings of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, until became property of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and finally, in the end, was annexed to Italy.
.
During the Second World War, Porto Santo Stefano was totally destroyed and was rebuilt only during the fifties. At the present time Porto Santo Stefano and its sea promenade is a lovely corner of paradise, destination of élite tourism. The islands of Giglio and Giannutri, places of extraordinary beauty, are also loved by the most expert and demanding scuba divers, thanks to their sea-beds, rich with marine flora and fauna. Also Porto Ercole, with its haven of Cala Galera is a destination yearned for. On the Porto Ercole sea promenade, in the evening you will be able to enjoy a serene and relaxing atmosphere, enjoying the delicious cuisine of mainly fresh fish, provided by the typical restaurants with their terraces over the sea. The village is “dominated” by a characteristic Spanish fortress. The coast of Monte Argentario, very jagged, offers big and small coves, mainly rocky, of extreme beauty from the naturalist point of view and in which you will be able to swim in crystal clear waters.
